ABOUT ME

Hello, my name is Carl Otten. I am a senior studying mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. I am passionate about design and bettering the human experience through technological and social innovation. I embrace challenges and strive to make things work by first understanding their nuances.

resumé

MY SKILLS & EXPERTISE

I have a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles and am proficient in various design software, including SolidWorks, Creo Parametric, and multiple coding languages. I am also skilled in project management and team collaboration, and I have experience working on interdisciplinary projects that require effective communication and coordination.

Leadership roles I have embraced during my time as an undergraduate include:

  • Founder and President of Debate at Iowa State University

  • Treasurer of CMU Debate at Carnegie Mellon University

  • Challenge Coin Competition Team Lead at Lockheed Martin

  • Creator of Informative Discussion Series in partnership with Dietrich College at Carnegie Mellon University

Beyond the roles I explicitly hold, I make an effort to take on additional responsibilities to help guide my teams in course projects.

EDUCATION

  • Treasurer of CMU Debate, Member of CM Racing, Tau Beta Pi (ΤΒΠ), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)

  • Creator of SPEAK (Students Prioritizing Effective Argumentation and Knowledge), an informative discussion series surrounding controversial topics supported and funded by Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Iowa State University – Ames, IA          August 2021 - May 2022
Bachelor of Science - Mechanical Engineering | First-Year Honors Program | GPA: 4.0/4.0

  • Founder and President of Debate Club

WORK EXPERIENCE

Lockheed Martin – King of Prussia, PA          May 2023 - Present

Mechanical Engineering Intern

  • Collaboratively led efforts to validate theoretical torque values for a new hardware component, helping to guide the design of test fixtures and data collection requirements

  • Conducted a design trade study to explore new alternatives to heritage designs, increasing the potential for system reliability

  • Constructed and released 6 CAD models, advancing progress toward testing and production deadlines

  • Developed a presentation for drawing release and best practices for program-wide usage, providing engineers of all stages with an essential tool for reducing time spent on everyday tasks

  • Revised vital quality verification of 300+ production parts through technical document analysis, saving the company months of lead time and sufficient cost

  • Led the documentation and organization of equipment and fixtures (Over 400 items) for a newly developed lab space, allowing for a quick transition from setup to work

  • Traveled to LM Space headquarters in Colorado to coordinate with the engineering team regarding upcoming tests and emerging program tasks

  • Presented to current VP regarding accomplishments, impacts, and lessons learned during my internship

  • Led a team of 8 interns in a company-wide challenge coin design competition

Vision Woodworking – Fridley, MN          May 2022 - August 2022

Logistics Coordinator

  • Assisted in the fabrication, quality verification, and shipment of custom products with an emphasis on reducing waste

ISU Energetic Materials Lab – Ames, IA          January 2022 - May 2022

Undergraduate Research Assistant

  • Collaborated with graduate and undergraduate students in designing and conducting two experiments to validate the effects of microwaves on existing energetic materials through the operation of spectroscopic and optical equipment

  • Guided the determination of experimental parameters, leading to findings of up to 100% faster energetic material burn rates
